From Ironman to Financial Fitness: The Power of Discipline and Commitment

Davis Hoyt completed Ironman Lahti 70.3 Finland in June 2024. Crossing the finish line of an Ironman event takes sacrifice, persistence, discipline, and a committed coach.

16 weeks prior to the event, Davis greeted dark mornings and repetitive daily routines. That’s where he found the time to train before starting the day. Training takes careful planning and consistent execution.   Each day brings lessons in discipline and commitment.

With an average of 18 hours per week dedicated to training, week by week, small victories revealed themselves.  It’s not just about the physical skills of swimming, biking, or running; it’s about the dedication and the commitment to improve a little each day, knowing that your hard work will be rewarded when you cross the finish line.

Becoming financially fit isn’t much different from being an endurance athlete, or any athlete for that matter. Athletes don’t wake up one day, decide on a race the next day, and perform without preparation. They set a goal and create a tailored plan, often with a team of experts like a coach or mentor, to help them develop the discipline to perform their best on event day.

Similarly, someone looking to increase their financial fitness is aiming for a future goal, such as retirement, and creating a plan with a team of retirement experts. This might involve a spending plan and fully contributing to an employer’s retirement plan with an individualized allocation.

Regular check-ins with a financial coach can help keep the focus required to stay on track toward retirement. The discipline and planning  you are willing to make in the present will help ensure your retirement is successful. A financial coach can help you decide if your spending habits provide value to your life or  are just habits.

Staying financially fit and having an active plan to work towards the end goal is a great way to ensure that you will cross the retirement finish line and be ready to transition into the next phase of life.
